Senior living has certainly changed over the past decade. An industry that once provided very little hands-on care has blossomed into a wonderful option for older adults. It now provides varying levels of assistance with residents’ activities of daily living, while arranging many opportunities for socialization and community. I am fortunate to work for Arrow Senior Living leading the Vitalia Active Adult Community – North Olmsted team. I would like to share a little about my journey to becoming a senior living leader.
I started my journey in senior living 32 years ago. After dropping out of business college, I became a State Certified Nursing Assistant and fell in love with caring for people. After nursing school, I worked in home health, hospitals, urgent care, and physician office settings. It was not until I worked in a senior living community that I felt at home and have continued to work in senior living communities.
Working in senior living is very rewarding; it is about making a difference. It is a hard decision for a resident to decide to move into a senior living community. Being able to be warm, welcoming, and supportive is a gift you get to keep giving.
Arrow Senior Living has an amazing culture they grew around their core values. My favorite core value is, “I understand transparency builds trust.” Each community has a regional team that is hands on and very supportive. Arrow promotes growth within the company for the staff. I can see myself transitioning from my current position as Assistant Executive Director to an Executive Director position within Arrow Senior Living.
If someone is considering a career in senior living management, I would tell them, senior living management is a fulfilling career. As a manager, you get to enrich the lives of not only the residents, but their families and friends also.
