As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Olmsted, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel they truly belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. As a result, when residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and gain the emotional support that genuine relationships provide.
To me, community in a senior living setting is where connections grow, laughter is shared, and each day feels like being among family.

Building connections is essential because it turns a place to live into a place to belong. Furthermore, strong relationships bring joy, purpose, and a true sense of home.
I encourage engagement by introducing residents to others with similar interests or backgrounds. These introductions often spark friendships that develop naturally through conversation and shared activities. In addition, I look for small moments to bring people together, which helps create comfort and confidence.
I also help residents stay connected to the wider town through outings to parks, museums, theaters, farmers’ markets, and local festivals. These trips not only keep residents active but also deepen their connection to the community around them.
One of my favorite events is our cooking and baking classes. During these gatherings, residents work together on recipes, enjoy tasting their creations, and share family stories that build camaraderie and nostalgia.
When welcoming new residents, I focus on creating meaningful early connections. I personally greet them, learn about their interests, and introduce them to both staff and fellow residents. Consequently, they feel supported and included from the very beginning.
At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Olmsted, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster community can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home with memories residents and their families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
