Culinary Tips and Tricks

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Christine Archey, Regional Culinary Coordinator

As Regional Culinary Coordinator, I have a wealth of experience in creating meals that are not only nutritious but also delicious and satisfying. Over the years, I’ve picked up countless tricks that make cooking easier, more flavorful, and a lot more fun. I want to share my best-kept secrets—unexpected ingredient pairings, must-have pantry staples, underrated kitchen tools, and game-changing techniques that can transform the way you cook. Whether you’re a beginner looking to sharpen your skills or a seasoned cook hoping to elevate your dishes, these expert insights will inspire you to get creative in the kitchen.

Smart Tools and Flavorful Foundations

Two underrated kitchen tools every cook should have are squeeze bottles and a bench scraper. Squeeze bottles are extremely versatile. They work great for olive oil, dish soap, pancake batter, salad dressings, condiments, and even refilling salt and pepper shakers.

The bench scraper isn’t just for dough. Use it to transfer chopped ingredients, slice baked goods, or clean your prep area quickly and efficiently.

To build flavorful meals quickly, stock up on pantry staples like fresh and granulated garlic, Sriracha, quality dried herbs, fun-shaped pasta, and a good marinara or tomato sauce. These simple ingredients go a long way in bringing meals together with ease.

Techniques, Pairings, and Pro Finishes

One of the best techniques beginners can learn is mise en place. Having everything prepped before cooking—chopped veggies, measured liquids, and heated pans—makes the process smooth and enjoyable. Early in my career, I learned to use the ends of produce as natural handles. Holding them while slicing gives better control and reduces waste.

Unexpected ingredient pairings can unlock bold new flavors. I love combining black coffee with chocolate or watermelon with feta and mint. For a refreshing twist, drizzle olive oil and balsamic glaze over the watermelon salad.

When it comes to steak, I rely on a bold seasoning blend. For pasta, I finish each dish with a squeeze of lemon, a little zest, and a pinch of salt to brighten and balance the flavor. For soups and stews, I follow a “less is more” mindset. Start with raw veggies or meat, add liquid, and finish with lemon juice or vinegar to elevate the flavor.

To give your meals a restaurant-quality touch, always let your meat rest before slicing. This locks in juices and ensures every bite is tender and satisfying.

Mastering these culinary tips and tricks will elevate your home cooking. Simple techniques can turn ordinary meals into something memorable. By applying what I’ve learned throughout my career, you’ll cook with more flavor, confidence, and creativity every day.
