My name is Angela Garcia, and I’m the memory care director at Vitalia Active Adult Community – North Olmsted. In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate Roberta, one of our neighborhood residents!
Roberta A. raised six kids before going back to college in her 40s to receive her teaching degree. She then taught 3rd grade for over 20 years. Roberta has three “loves” in her life: her husband, her singing, and her fabric, not necessarily in that order. As a professional barbershop singer, she performed at shows and competitions over a 30-year period, placing first nationally and internationally. Singing made her light up, whether she was just at home on the piano, on the stage in front of hundreds, or at a group home making special needs kids smile. When she wasn’t singing, she could be found sewing baby blankets, patching up old jeans, or anything in between. She belonged to several quilting guilds in the area, making quilts for those in need. Roberta was never without a working project.
In the North Olmsted neighborhood, we connect individuals living with dementia to their personal history by spending time talking with the residents to help them understand their life’s achievements, struggles and what makes them unique.
