Refreshing the Community

Category: Uncategorized

Author: Joseph Heinen, Plant Operations Director

As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.

After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at Vitalia North Olmsted, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.

Reviewing Outdoor Spaces

For the spring refresh, my team and the Resident Services Department completed a full survey of the community grounds. We inspected outdoor areas, especially common spaces such as patios, courtyards, main entrances, and front and backyards.

We also reviewed archived photos from previous years. This helped us compare targeted areas and identify what needed attention.

Recent seasonal projects included cleaning the Independent Living dining room patio. We used an air blower to clear the grounds, removed debris, salt buckets, and shovels, and power washed the outdoor furniture and tables.

After cleaning the space, we rearranged decorative items and placed seasonal plants near the portable plant beds. These updates helped refresh the patio for residents to enjoy.

A lack of storage space requires us to leave some outdoor furniture outside. In the past, water hoses also stayed outside through the winter. Last year, we discovered that some hoses had deteriorated or become damaged.

To prevent that from happening again, we collected the water hoses this year and moved them to storage before winter began.

Planning Ahead

I am currently obtaining vendor quotes for an additional storage shed. This would allow us to store outdoor furniture during the winter and better protect it from seasonal damage.

I also plan to repair the community’s large power washer. This will help us better maintain the appearance and condition of outdoor common areas. In addition, we are working on purchasing more gardening tools and repainting the plant beds.

It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure Vitalia North Olmsted continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
