Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Vitalia North Olmsted, I wanted to make the dining experience more personal. In a traditional restaurant, the guests are always changing. That can make it harder to receive meaningful feedback or build lasting connections.
Senior living is different. Residents let us know how they feel about the food and service. Their feedback helps the culinary team personalize the experience and make each meal better.
Residents have also taught me to take good care of myself. Their experiences remind me that my choices matter over time. Caring for ourselves now helps us live well later.
One favorite tradition is brunch, along with all of our special events. I make it a point to be out front with the residents during these moments. That allows me to hear instant feedback and stay connected to their experience.
Success in senior living culinary takes empathy and understanding. Sometimes people are struggling in ways we cannot see. A strong culinary team remembers that and responds with patience.
It also means not taking criticism personally. Feedback can become a tool for better service. When we listen and adjust, we can personalize the experience and hopefully bring residents joy.
One moment that shows the importance of this work comes through seeing residents with their families. Families may not always be able to be there as often as they would like. In those moments, the community becomes even more important.
Knowing we are there for residents as extended family is meaningful. Dining in senior living is not only about serving food and beverages. It is about presence, comfort, and helping residents feel cared for every day.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
